Cooch Behar Trophy: Jharkhand trounce Odisha by 194 runs

Jharkhand trounced Odisha by 194 runs on the fourth and last day of their Cooch Behar Trophy Under-19 Group-A match at Vikash Ground in Bargarh today. This was the third defeat for Odisha, who continued to languish at the bottom of the group table with one point from four matches.

Chasing a daunting target of 399 for victory, Odisha were all out for 204 in their second innings, losing last five wickets for 23 runs. Jharkhand set the tough target for Odisha by declaring their second innings at 218 for nine. Aditya Singh and captain Atul Singh Surwar scored a half-century each for the visitors, while Rajesh Mohanty once against became the most successful bowler for Odisha taking three wickets for 32 runs.

Kunal Mallick and Jyoti Behera also slammed a half-century each for Odisha in the second innings. Behera was going strong on 52 and Somen Chand was giving him company on 14 when stumps were drawn for the day.

Earlier, Jharkhand gained a first-innings lead of 180 runs by making 276 and then bundling out host Odisha for a paltry 96. Put into bat by Odisha captain Raghunath Malla, the visitors were in deep trouble at one stage, losing seven wickets for 89 runs.

But defiant performance by lower-order batsmen enabled them to muster a respectable total. Amar Choudhary and Vivek Anand Tiwari started fight back with a 69-run partnership for the eighth wicket. Sushant Mishra and Junaid Ashraf added insult to Odisha’s injury by putting on 101 runs for the last-wicket partnership.

Last bastman Mishra became the top-scorer for Jharkhand, hitting an unbeaten 61 with the help of 10 fours and one six. Rajesh Mohanty was most successful bowler for Odisha, bagging five wickets for 73 runs.

In reply, Odisha’s batting line-up made a meek surrender and no one could reach even the 20-run mark. After tormenting the Odisha bowling department with his ubeaten half-centurn, Sushant Mishra became the wrecker in chief of the home team’s batting line-up, taking four wickets for 24 runs. Odisha will play their fifth match against Tamil Nadu at TNCA Academy, Tirunelveli from December 25 to 28.
